Van Riebeeck Society (VRS). First Series Volume 24 Cape Town 1943. Light cloth boards. 364pp illustrated b/w plates, foldout map. 8vo. Ownership inscription. edges & eps foxed. spine tanned, generally sound clean VG condition. Original Dutch text, with Afrikaans introduction. 48pp English summary by P.J. Smuts. The author visited the Cape in 1825, visiting the Caledon baths for 'the cure', Genadendaal Mission, Franschoek & Stellenbosch. He was on his way to Java onboard the "Abel Tasman", but was forced to stay over at the Cape for health reasons. He made very detailed and factual observations, being particularly critical of slavery at the Cape.
